Turning Pages on Tuesdays at Tully
A Sweet Semester with The Chocolate Touch
On Tuesdays this semester, Altrusa volunteers are spending time with third graders at Tully Elementary, reading The Chocolate Touch together and exploring the story in creative ways.
The classic tale follows a boy whose love of chocolate leads to unexpected consequences, offering students plenty to consider — from cause and effect to personal responsibility and character growth. As the story unfolds week by week, students are not only listening and discussing, but also sketching the ideas they glean from each chapter.
Creative Expression Supports Reading Comprehension
Through drawing, they capture scenes, emotions, and themes that stand out to them, reinforcing comprehension while encouraging creativity. The project blends literacy and art, helping students engage with the story on multiple levels.
This full-semester reading experience is part of Altrusa’s broader literacy commitment at Tully. In addition to Readers’ Theatre, classroom support, and the preschool library program, Altrusans continue to look for meaningful ways to strengthen reading skills and foster a lifelong love of books.
