Inspiring the Next Generation of Writers

Young Authors Contest

Each year, Altrusa International of Tucson encourages young writers across Southern Arizona to discover the power of their own voices through the Young Authors Contest. Open to students in elementary, middle, and high school, the contest invites participants to submit original stories, poems, and essays that showcase their creativity, imagination, and perspective. Volunteer judges review the submissions and select outstanding entries in each grade category. Winning pieces are published in a printed anthology, giving students the exciting experience of seeing their work in print and sharing it with family, teachers, and the community.

Why It Matters

The Young Authors Contest is more than an award — it’s a literacy initiative that connects students with reading, writing, and the joy of sharing their ideas. Throughout the year, Altrusa members:

• Visit classrooms to read books by Festival authors and inspire creativity

• Partner with libraries to encourage contest participation

• Judge hundreds of entries with care and fairness

• Award prizes and recognize winning students at the Tucson Festival of Books

• Publish an anthology that preserves young voices for years to come

Through this program, Altrusa helps students build confidence in their writing while strengthening literacy across our community. If you believe in encouraging young readers and writers, consider getting involved by supporting or joining the local Altrusa chapter.
