Books Bound for Tanzania

Gail Dent and Elaine Wilder recently spent a rewarding day in Green Valley helping prepare books for the nonprofit Libraries for the World to send to a community center and library in Tanzania.

Their work was one important step in a much larger process. Deb Chavez first adds a card pocket and checkout card to each book, then enters the title into a database so the library will have an organized, usable collection when the books arrive. Once the preparation is complete, Libraries for the World will ship the books to Africa.

Deb and her team plan to travel to Tanzania in the spring to train the people who will operate the library. Their work will help ensure the books are not simply delivered, but become part of a lasting community resource that can support literacy, learning, and opportunity for years to come.

For Altrusans, the project reflects much of what service is about: people quietly contributing their time, skills, and energy to help others build something meaningful. From encouraging young writers and supporting local students to collecting books, strengthening libraries, and promoting literacy beyond our own community, Altrusa members continue to show how practical service can have a far-reaching impact.

Gail and Elaine said the work was both great fun and deeply rewarding. They are already hoping that more members can join them in Green Valley next time, allowing the group to prepare even more books—and perhaps work a little faster with a few extra hands.

Each labeled book, completed database entry, and packed box brings the Tanzania library one step closer to opening its doors. It is a simple task with a much larger purpose: helping create a place where people can read, learn, discover, and imagine what comes next.
