Altrusa Tucson Visits Immaculate Heart Academy to Discuss the Young Authors Contest
Altrusa Tucson members Gail Dent and Ann Banwell recently visited Immaculate Heart Academy, where they spoke with students about the Young Authors Contest and provided insight into the judging process. They also sat down with Bear Essential News student reporter Maya Pieterse (5th grade) to discuss the contest and the importance of creative writing.
During the visit, fifth-grade students explored valuable storytelling techniques. “Believe it or not, the most important tip I can give you is making your story entertaining. We must read hundreds of stories, and we love reading something fun and creative,” Dent shared. She explained that a strong story needs rich details, a compelling hook, a well-developed plot, and fully realized characters to stand out.
At the end of the visit, Maya conducted an interview focused on the judging process and what makes a winning entry. Her article on the contest will be published in Bear Essential News on March 1, and we encourage everyone to check it out to learn more about the contest and the art of storytelling.
A highlight of the visit was the announcement of the 2025 Young Authors Contest winners. These talented students will have their stories published in an official contest anthology, with copies donated to their school libraries.
