A New Chapter for the Kellond Elementary Library

Last Friday, Altrusa volunteers gathered at Kellond Elementary School to begin what may become a year-long project: partnering with Kellond staff to transform the school library into a more welcoming, relevant, and engaging space for students.

Kellond Principal Angela Schiavone has already developed a clear vision for the library and identified the older, unused books that need to be removed. Altrusa volunteers are now helping discard those books from the library system and take them off the shelves so the collection can be reorganized.

The group has already created many new categories for sorting the remaining books, including fantasy, adventure, realistic fiction, animal stories, and more. That work is ongoing, and several additional Altrusans have committed to helping this week.

The principal also wants to bring more art into the library. Last spring, older students began designing ceiling tiles inspired by books, adding another creative element to the space and helping make the library feel more personal and inviting.

The partnership grew through Gina Carrillo, a Kellond teacher and longtime friend of Altrusa who has welcomed Altrusans into her classroom for reading activities many times over the years. Former TUSD librarians who volunteer with Altrusa are also helping refine the project with their experience.

Volunteers who participated in Friday’s work session included Susan and Pat Young, Elaine Wilder, Elda Lopez, Gail Dent, and Elsa Nelson.

This is only the beginning. As the work continues, Altrusa and Kellond staff hope to create a vibrant, positive library where students can more easily discover books that capture their interest and encourage a lifelong love of reading.
