August Service Focus: Treasures for Tucson Teachers
In August, Altrusa Tucson lent its support to Treasures for Teachers, a nonprofit that helps local educators stretch their classroom budgets. For many teachers, buying supplies out of pocket has become a routine part of the job. Treasures for Teachers eases that burden by collecting donated items and making them available in a warehouse full of “treasures.”
For a modest membership fee of $35 per year, teachers can shop the shelves. Each $5 bag they fill may include pencils, markers, art supplies, or teaching tools—whatever they can use to spark learning in their classrooms. The warehouse is open after school hours and on Saturdays for convenience.
Altrusa members gathered and delivered supplies in August, with Marcia Lucas leading the charge on collection and delivery. As always, volunteers were ready at the warehouse to help unload donations—one carload at a time.
Looking Ahead: September Service Focus
September’s service project turns attention to The Haven, a recovery center for women overcoming substance abuse. Many women arrive with little more than the clothes they’re wearing, often straight from prison. This month, Altrusans are cleaning out closets to provide clothing donations and continuing our support through the free library we established in front of The Haven, which serves both residents and the surrounding neighborhood.
At the same time, September brings broader opportunities to recognize and celebrate literacy. It is both National Literacy Month and Hispanic Heritage Month—a perfect reminder of why Altrusa invests so deeply in reading programs, library projects, and the Young Authors Contest.
